About Holly

This is Holly.

I’m Holly. I was born 24 years ago in London. I spent a brief while in Portugal, which ended abruptly due to a newly built house, a mountain, and a swimming pool. At the age of three I moved to Cambridge and grew up with a passion for history, art and above all literature. I also liked languages (espeically ones with different alphabets) but did way too many at GCSE and decided to give them all up for A Level. At university I studied English, but mainly spent my time in a theatre. When I graduated I aimed to become a professional theatre director. In the frequent times when I was unemployed during my first year out of uni, I learnt to bake and it became a bit of an obsession. In 2006 I got some jobs as a script reader and decided that I wanted to be a script developer. In 2007 I got a place on a TV course in Edinburgh and decided to move into TV. Then I got work with a wonderful production company called Artichoke and wanted to work backstage on big street theatre events. Then they gave me some work as a professional blogger and I liked that too. So now I seem to be doing a little bit of everything, and I love it. What doesn’t change, though, is the way people always say that I ‘don’t have a proper job’. Hence the subtitle of this blog.

I have a passion for the arts: for film and television in particular. I find it very difficult to be in my home without having a film or programme on in the background (music just doesn’t cut it). And if BBC IPlayer was a person? – we would be BFF. Sometimes I get worried about work, money and paying the rent, particularly in the ‘current economic climate’ (a phrase my partner hates because it’s used so often – I try to use it twice as much now just to annoy him). Ultimately, though, I love the variety and freedom that being a freelancer gives me. I get to work on incredibly exciting projects and meet fantastic people. On the rare occassion that I don’t like a job, I know that I really won’t be doing it forever. And when I’m ‘between jobs’ I’m getting better at not worrying how I’m going to pay the rent: instead I enjoy it by catching up on sleep, baking and writing.

This blog is going to be largely about my editing and film work – a bit of a portfolio but also a bit of a place where I can experiment and ask your opinions, which are always valid because I’m still very much a learner.

Oh, and if you work in the film, TV or theatre industry? Do remember that I’m always for hire…
